“Closer,” the first single off of Iceboy Violet & Nueen’s upcoming album You Said You'd Hold My Hand Through The Fire, shows how fertile and expansive the idea of the remake can be—it’s something like a beautiful bastard baby borne of Burial’s “Shell of Light.” It uses the same pitched-up vocal sample, only here Violet’s deep vocal delivery laments the demise of a relationship, and Nueen’s brooding production essentially throws that child out into the storm and rain of heartbreak. And while there’s something slightly euphoric in the melancholy of “Shell of Light” that makes you want to dance, the track is pure comedown music. It’s for the bus ride home, when the Molly is wearing off and you slip into a sort of chemically-induced sadness. The last line, droned out as the instrumental falls apart into a tonal echo, rings in your ears, whether or not your night’s highs and lows were caused by a pressed pill or another human being: “I don’t want to make more mistakes.”
